Sunday: Hillbrow Part III
It’s our day off and we attend mass at the church we’d been invited to at yesterday’s march. The large stain glass window depicting a Star of David is evidence of the building’s past life as a synagogue. It’s located across the street from the Bad Boy’z office. We catch the eye of the security guard and he directs into a tight spot on the sidewalk between a building and tree. He’ll keep an eye the van. We’re making friends with the right people.
Day 6: Hillbrow Part II
We’re going to a march against human trafficking today. The march will follow a route lined with brothels and centers of criminal activity. We pick-up Swatoli, get lost, get found, and meet-up with Melanie. We are late. We step out of the van. Around the corner, a large crowd has gathered and is already whipped into a frenzy. David straps on the DVTEC shoulder harness for the camera and races away. “Hurry-up or we’re going to miss it,” he calls back to us.
We try and find a position away from the crowd. It’s impossible. There are too many people. People are chanting, singing, dancing. It’s chaotic, but in a fun way. Courtney slates for Oliver. I have a pack filled with lenses and other camera equipment strapped to my back. David looks through the viewfinder. “What am I supposed to be shooting?” he calls out.
